Coughing, Sneezing, Runny Nose, Fever So No Rest Kinda Week

For the past seven days I've been homebound with a very sick little girl. It started out with a couple days of a really high fever followed by a nasty cough that kept the entire family up at night. It's crazy how life is put on hold when a child is sick. I cancelled most of my plans last week and any rules about eating, sleeping, tv watching, etc. were non existent. It's one of those, "just go with the flow" times.

We watched A LOT of Sesame Street and the Mickey Mouse Club House and since my daughter's appetite was gone I let her eat what ever she wanted. I remember my Mom used to make me soup and give me as many popsicles as I wanted.

Dealing with a sick toddler is taxing - emotionally and physically. I felt so helpless when she'd cough so much that she'd vomit. I tried so many things to try to soothe her cough like:

  • Honey & Lemon - I mixed equal parts of honey with some lemon and gave some of the mixture to her with a spoon or a syringe (you know the ones that come with infant medicine). This mixture helped until she started to regject it all together.
  • Humidifer - I kept this on at night while she slept.
  • Vicks Vapor Rub - I rubbed this on the bottoms of her feet and coverd them with socks. Oddly enough this helped a lot.
  • Oregano Tea - Sounds nasty but my family swears by it. I boiled some water and oregono seasoning to make the tea. Reese wanted nothing to do with it so I ended up drinking it.

Thankfully I think the worst has past and she's on the mend. I'm curious -- What some remedies you use when you have a sick child?

You did great! I swear by the humidifier, honey & Vicks Baby Rub on chest and feet! Hope she's better soon!

One thing that has always helped with me is going into the bathroom, shutting the door, and turning the hot shower on letting the room fill up with steam like a sauna...then breathe for a while. It's really really helpful.
